Your Surgery Day

Going to the operating room is not a normal experience for most of us.

Dr. Carr and his team of highly skilled OR professionals recognize the natural anxiety and make your stay at Skinworks as secure and comfortable as possible. Your surgery will be performed on site at our world-class facility which is accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Located on the west side of Vancouver, our private operating room is certified every 3 years by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons to ensure the highest standards of medical care.

Our goal at Skinworks is for you to have a relaxing experience and a comfortable recovery from your surgery.

Since 2004, thousands of successful surgeries have been performed at Skinworks under the care of Dr. Carr, Dr. Lee (anaesthesiologist), and our professional operative team of accredited OR nurses and our post operative care nurses. All our OR and recovery teams undergo regular training in patient safety and care to ensure our patients receive the best surgical care.

The Day of Your Surgery

On the day of your surgery, please arrive one hour and fifteen minutes before your scheduled surgery time. You will be escorted to the surgery suite and asked to change into a gown and robe. Take time and relax in one of our patient rooms as you meet with Dr. Carr to review your surgery details. If you are receiving general anaesthetic, you will also meet with our anaesthesiologist, Dr. Dick Lee, who has been with our team since 2004.

This is the time for final surgical planning; it is also when we will do basic preparation or draw on your skin as needed. There will also be time for last-minute questions. After meeting with Dr. Carr and Dr. Lee, you will be taken into the operating room and be administered your general anaesthesia or IV sedation.

When your surgery has been completed and your dressings are in place, you will be transferred to our recovery room. You will be connected to monitoring equipment constantly. During this period, one of our highly experienced recovery nurses will monitor and assist you and remain with you at all times.

Your stay in the recovery room will last approximately 1 to 2 hours, depending on how soon you are ready to leave. Most patients are fully awake within 30 to 60 minutes after surgery but may not remember much about their stay in the recovery room. While we are certified for overnight stays, the majority of operations allow for same day discharge.

When you are ready to go home, your recovery nurse will review your post operative care requirements with you and your ride companion. Our private elevator and underground parkade will ensure your privacy while exiting the building and provide you with safe and easy access to your car.

At home, take time to rest and follow your post operative care instructions. The day after your surgery, our post operative care nurse or patient coordinator Tammy will call you to monitor your progress.
